Organic Chicken, Eggs, and Pork... ...raised on grass
Pasture-Raised Chicken sold as whole birds
Laying hens in winter. 2007.
Fluffy chicks! Broiler chickens nearly ready to graduate from the brooder. 2008.
Broiler chickens in bottomless pens, which are moved daily. Here they're between young pears and apple trees. On ideal sward conditions, chickens can get up to 20% of their daily ration from pasture (grass, seeds, bugs, worms).
Most of our chickens are larger than is usual for local or natural chicken. They average 5.5 - 6 lbs, compared to the weight of 3.5 - 4.5 lbs often found. Smaller chickens are popular, generally, because of the 'friendlier' price. By harvesting a larger chicken, we spread the fixed cost of slaughtering over more saleable weight. This allows us to charge less per pound. This allows our customers to buy more pastured chicken for their money. We always encourage folks to save bones/necks/giblets for soup or stock to stretch their purchase.
* 100% organic grain * raised with love * processed under USDA inspection
Currently available frozen at our farm and Farmers' Markets. Retail price for 2009 (May) market season is $4.00/lb.
Chicken Shares Buying chicken shares ensures you get chicken. We will attempt to have enough to sell over the winter again, but next year- who knows- we could sell out. Chicken shares can complement a fruit and vegetable CSA share, or be enjoyed on their own. There is no limit-- you can fill your freezer and enjoy roast chickens all winter!
Benefits of Buying a Chicken Share (or 3) * Savings off of retail * Chickens are fresh! * Sustainable: manure is utilized as plant food -- non-polluting. Rations ensure acreage of grain under organic management. * Quality: people tell us the chickens are very good. We agree. Chickens grown with fresh air, sunlight, grass & bugs are much healthier than their industrial counterparts and therefore, much healthier for the eater. Their meat is flavorful and juicy, and stock made from bones is rich in healthful gelatin. No antibiotics, vaccines, medications. * Economy: a $20 bird provides multiple meals of high quality meat and broth. Try roast chicken with gravy, followed by chicken sandwiches, followed by a rich stock. Or, cut up chicken, barbecue wings and thighs, freeze breast meat for a stir fry, freeze backs and necks for soup. Endless possibilities. * Respect: support a system that honors food animals by allowing them to live naturally and comfortably.
We grow a 6 lb chicken = sell for $24.00 $1 for the chick, $7.50 for organic feed, $5 for slaughtering. This leaves $9.50 for labor, land, pens/feeders/watering system, taxes, profit, etc. We grow a 4 lb chicken = sell for $16.00 $1 for the chick, $5.00 for organic feed, $5 for slaughtering. This leaves $5 for labor, land, pens/feeders/watering system, taxes, profit, etc. To be able to grow a 4 lb chicken we would have to raise our price. |
Pork information -- coming real soon!
Pastured Eggs
Undoubtedly nature's perfect food.
Egg availability is limited. We have chickens because Martha loves hens and pastured eggs best of all, not because they are a profitable farm enterprise. We will bring eggs to the Winter Farmers' Market while it lasts. For 2009, eggs will be available only to CSA members for purchase. Any surpluses will be available to the neighborhood and at Farmers' Market.
